Book four of this series was the perfect way to end it. Each of here books can be read as a standalone, but you will want to read book 1 beforehand in my opinion to get the back the full story for the history on Julian and Kendall's story.

Kendall and Julian's story was one I was hoping we would get after reading their side story in book 1. There was definite chemistry between them, so getting to see them together in this story was perfect for them. They both have broken pasts and they were broken together, seeing their second chance romance was sweet. I loved seeing Julian admit his faults in the past, but what I loved even more was how Julian accepted Kendall. Julian knew he had hurt her, but he also knew he loved her. Watching them grow together as a couple was one of my favorite aspects of their story.

I loved this story from start to finish. Carly Phillips is one of my favorite romance authors and I seriously one click every one of her stories. There is always something about her books that make me feel and love all the words that she gives to me as a reader. I can't wait what else she brings to us in the future.

Excerpt

New leash and collar in hand, Julian walked into For Paws to pick up his new dog. He was excited to have a pet, happy to know he’d have company, and dammit, looking forward to seeing Kendall again.

When he arrived, she was nowhere to be found. Josie, the other woman he’d met, walked him through the signing of the paperwork, reiterated his responsibilities, and congratulated him on his new family member.

“Are you ready to go get him?” she asked, oblivious to Julian’s disappointment in missing out on his chance to see Kendall again.

“Sure thing. Let’s go get Steve.” He followed her through the back door and into the area where the dogs were kept.

He glanced down the row to Steve’s pen, where to his surprise, Kendall sat with his dog on her lap, petting his head and talking to him in a soft voice.

Julian let out a breath he hadn’t been aware of holding, relief and pleasure suffusing him in equal measure. He wouldn’t have to leave without talking to Kendall.

“You’re going to a good home,” Kendall said softly, unaware they were behind her. “You’ll be well fed and loved. And even if I won’t see you anymore, I’ll always remember you.”

“It’s hard for us not to get attached,” Josie explained quietly. “Kendall has a soft spot for Steve because he’s been here for such a long time.” Josie treated him to a warm smile. “I’ll leave you now. Kendall can get you settled from here.”

Josie stepped away, heading back to the front office. Julian stood in silence, watching Kendall. Her head was bent low, her long ponytail falling over one shoulder, her neck exposed. The desire to glide his lips over the exposed skin was strong. The urge to mark her there, even stronger.

Something about Kendall affected him deeply.

As he walked quietly closer to the pen, once again he was struck by the quiet strength in her now, the even keel to her mood compared to before. He’d known she was smart, but this woman clearly had depths he hadn’t seen or plummed. And he realized how much he wanted to know her again. To learn who she was now and to introduce her to the man he’d become. The one he wanted to be, in part, for her.

At the realization, he blew out a sharp breath.

As if sensing him, she looked up. She stood, the gray dog still in her arms.

He smiled. “Mind if I ask you something?”

“Go on,” she said warily.

He took in the protective way she cuddled Steve against her chest. Steve wasn’t tiny, and it couldn’t have been easy to hold him for long.

“Why didn’t you take him? You’re obviously bonded,” he said, as the dog licked her neck. The lucky bastard.

She sighed. “My building has a one dog only rule. And you’ve met Waffles. Besides, we can’t save them all ourselves, as Josie likes to remind me.”

He inclined his head. “Then your loss is my gain.”

She shifted the dog and held him out for Julian. He accepted his new pet, juggling him with the leash, and held him up, meeting his gaze. “Looks like it’s you and me, Bud. You ready for your new life?”

“Something smells incredible,” Lucas said, his voice growing closer. He entered the room, his big body filling up the kitchen despite its substantial size for a Manhattan apartment. She looked him over through lowered lashes. Though it was a workday, his wardrobe choice consisted of a pair of faded jeans and a black tee shirt with the Blink logo. He looked as delicious as her cookies, and she wanted to take a bite out of him. Her thoughts stopped her in her tracks, and she felt her face flush. But his gaze was focused on the tin of treats, and he didn’t notice her heated cheeks or her traitorous hormones. He walked over, picked up one hot, melty cookie, and devoured it in one bite. “Mmm,” he said, closing his eyes and swallowing with a satisfied groan. Her girlie parts tingled. Yep, that’s how she chose to think of them. If she got any more specific, she’d be blushing more and in deeper trouble than she already was. “Good?” she managed to ask. “Delicious. The Billionaire Bad Boys are back and just as hot as book 1! Lucas and Maxie's story was absolutely swoon worthy. Carly Phillips did an amazing job once again.

Lucas had a story we didn't see in book 1 and getting to know him in Going Down Fast we perfect. He's been in love with Maxie for since he first met her, but he never had the opportunity to be with her. He has this side to him that I wasn't expecting. He cares deeply on a level for Maxie that surprised me. After reading Kade's book, I wasn't sure how Lucas would be when he found the one, but I loved him.

Maxie, this sweet soul. She hasn't had it easy recently and finds herself in a situation where she has to ask Lucas for help. She doesn't like asking for help or depending on anyone but herself, but when it comes to Lucas, she knows he will keep her safe and help her out. The only problem? She's been in love with him since she was a child, but she shouldn't act on it. Or should she?

Due to certain circumstances they've never been together, but the chemistry between these two is unreal. Maxie is a great fit for Lucas and doesn't let him steam roll her and take her. She stands on her own two feet. Their story was one of my favorites of this series and I can't wait for more.

Kade ignored them and strode onto the wooden dance floor, headed straight for Lexie. Just as he reached her, the song changed to one with a faster beat. She squealed in delight, looking up at the ceiling and lifting her arms in the air, swaying to song. The woman was going to be the death of him. He leaned against the brick façade of a building and took in the cool night air. Closing his eyes, he breathed in and out slowly, counting upward by four and down by four, until his heartrate slowed to a comfortable beat. He opened his eyes to find Lexie staring at him in silence.
